The ongoing battle between Russia and Google. Since 2022, Russia has been fighting both wars. Along with the direct war with Ukraine by launching missiles, Russia is also waging an economic war with America. Because since the start of the war with Ukraine, America has imposed sanctions on Russia one after another. Now Russia responded.
Russia fined the American company Google a large amount. One of America’s largest companies has been fined by Russia so heavily that it cannot be quantified. Even if the entire world’s wealth is combined, it will fall short. The amount of money the Russian court demanded from Google has so many zeroes that it’s hard to count.

How much money has Russia fined Google?
In fact, the Russian court ordered Google to pay $20 trillion in fines. And strangely, this amount of money is not even available to the whole world.
Why has Russia fined so much money?
The conflict began nearly four years ago, when Google removed the accounts of pro-Kremlin and government-controlled media channels from YouTube. Google alleged that these accounts violated restrictive laws and business rules. Subsequently, a Moscow court ordered Google to restore these channels. It also imposes a fine of 100,000 rubles per day if the order is disobeyed.
The situation became more serious after the war between Russia and Ukraine broke out in 2022. YouTube also blocked the accounts of other Russian media channels such as NTV, Russia 24, RT and Sputnik. YouTube removes more than 1,000 channels and 15,000 videos related to Russia’s views on the Ukraine conflict. One after another Russian TV channel filed a case against Google. Already, 17 Russian channels have sued Google to get their accounts back on YouTube. As a result, the amount of fine increases every day.

Meanwhile, after Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, Google scaled back its operations in Russia, but did not leave it entirely. Services such as YouTube and Google Search are still available in Russia, although Google’s Russian office went bankrupt after the government seized control of its bank accounts.
In such a situation, the Russian government wants to put pressure on Google by imposing this large fine, so that the company will once again allow Russian media to return to YouTube. In this regard, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that the fine was imposed to show how seriously Russia is taking the matter. Although he also admitted that he could not pronounce the amount of this fine.
Incidentally, since invading Ukraine, Russia has variously punished foreign tech companies for hosting content that is against it or supports Ukraine. YouTube is still available in Russia though. However, the government has warned that the platform could be blocked entirely in Russia if it continues to block Russian media channels in this way.
