22,400 crore piracy world of India

The proliferation of digital platforms has also led to an increase in illegal content streaming. And this is why even the best content is failing to generate revenue. And as a result media and entertainment industry is facing loss. Recently, a survey report was published by Ernst & Young and Mobile Association of India. According to this report, the world capital of piracy in India is around 22,400 crore rupees.

The fourth largest revenue generating sector is pirated content

As a result, according to the survey, the world of piracy is the fourth largest revenue generator in the media and entertainment industry. In the list of the highest revenue generating sectors in 2023, television comes first with Rs 69,600 crore, followed by digital media with Rs 65,400 crore, print media at third with Rs 26,000 crore and fourth with a staggering Rs 22,400 crore. money The Bollywood and regional cinema industry itself has collected a combined revenue of 19,700 crores, ranking sixth in the list. Seventh place is the gaming world with 22 thousand crore rupees. Due to piracy, OTT streaming platforms and the filmed entertainment world are not able to generate huge potential revenue.

Why is piracy increasing?

According to the ‘Rob Report’, there are three main reasons why consumers are increasingly choosing to watch pirated content instead of direct streaming platforms.

Subscription: This trend is growing as different streaming platforms can’t afford separate subscriptions.

Unavailable content of choice: People are also turning to piracy due to not getting content of their choice on certain platforms.

Enhanced Subscription Fees: In most cases, the subscription fees of such platforms are very high, which increases the tendency of piracy.

According to this survey, 84 percent people watch pirated content because they don’t want to spend money on movie tickets, and 70 percent people think spending money on OTT subscription is unnecessary.

Who is viewing this type of content the most?

According to this report, 76 percent of people who watch this type of pirated content mainly fall within the age range of 19-34 years. And those 45 years and older spend the most time on this type of content. They tend to focus more on television shows. Men are most prone to collect some old pirated movies that are no longer available in theaters or on authorized streaming platforms. And on the other hand women take help of piracy to watch exclusive OTT shows. Tier 2 cities are more likely to see this kind of pirated content. Inconvenience of traveling to cinemas, inadequacy of theaters is one of the reasons for this. Among the languages, Hindi content is the most pirated, while English content is the least pirated.
