A study by Michigan Technological University clearly states that astronauts cannot eat asteroids. But carbon can be extracted from them and turned into food. In fact, researchers have now succeeded in converting even plastic waste into edible food. This process is called pyrolysis, in which plastic is converted into oil. The oil is then fed to bacteria in a bioreactor, creating a nutritious biomass. Scientists claim that the same method could be used for carbon emitted from asteroids.
Currently, space travel is timed for astronauts due to food constraints. If this technology is successful, then space missions can continue for 600 years continuously. Because, due to this, the problem of loading food on the spacecraft will be solved. The cost of space travel could also come down.
