Apart from this, the government has blocked several apps to protect the data of Indian citizens. The Union government has blocked 18 OTT apps under the Information Technology Act, 2021, Delhi Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting L Murugan told the winter session of the Rajya Sabha. All these apps were showing obscene and pornographic content. This decision was taken under Section 69A of the Information Technology Act.

Not only were these apps blocked, but the owners of the apps were booked under Section 292 of the Indian Penal Code for displaying obscene content. According to the Indecent Representation of Women Prohibition Act of 1986, they have been directed to block all these apps. Among these are many apps that have over 1 crore downloads. Two of these apps have been downloaded more than 50 lakhs from the Play Store. And these platforms created a lot of fans by showing trailers, cut scenes etc. on their websites and social media to attract viewers. They had more than 32 lakh users on their social media accounts. Of these, 12 Facebook accounts, 17 Instagram accounts and 16 X handles and 12 YouTube channels belonged to these OTT platforms.
