Social Media App: Facebook, YouTube, X will all be closed this time! All media apps are banned here. On Thursday, the Nepal government said they were blocking most media platforms, including Facebook, X and YouTube, because agencies failed to comply with the rules required for registration with the government. Nepal’s Communications and Information broadcasting Minister Prithvi Subba Gurung has said that about two dozen social network platforms are widely used in Nepal have been given repeatedly (social media banned) so that they can formally register their companies in the country. But that did not happen, so they will be blocked immediately.
Tickets, Viber and three other media platforms will be allowed to work in Nepal because they are officially registered to the government. The Nepal government is asking these companies to hire a communication office or point in the country. They bring a bill to Parliament, whose aim is to ensure the social platforms properly managed, responsible and activation.
The bill has not yet received full agreement or approval in Parliament, but many are already seen as a tool for injury and punishment on opponents while protesting online. And so this law is widely criticized. Rights groups have called it a government’s efforts to abolish human rights expression of human rights and violate the fundamental rights of the citizens.
Officials say that the law is required to monitor the media, and both the user and the operator should be responsible and accountable for what both the user and the operator are sharing on these platforms and what are being published or being said.
Not just Facebook, YouTube, X, 20 more media apps are being banned in Nepal. LinkedIn, Reddit, Snapchat are also going to close this time. A few days ago, during a case in the Supreme Court, a verdict was announced that the apex court must be registered with their authorities before operating all the domestic and foreign platforms in the country. This step is to avoid the spread of unwanted content. A large number of cases have been filed in the Supreme Court since 2021, where most of the cases have been opposed to advertising and content promotion on the unregistered platform spread in Nepal.
