Look and design
The company has made a big change in OnePlus 3 due to which the design of the phone has completely changed. The rear panel which came with standtone finishing has been done away with. Cold, hard aluminum has taken its place. Additionally, this phone is made of unibody with a dull metallic finish which reminds of the HTC One M9. The OnePlus 3 is a beautiful, well-built phone and ultimately puts OnePlus in the league of great design companies.

The front of the phone is also quite stylish. Corning Gorilla Glass 4 has been provided with curves on the edges of the screen, which protects the phone from any kind of scratches and damage. Apart from this, there is a capacitive home button on the front which has a fingerprint sensor inbuilt. There are two more capacitive buttons on either side of the home button. Usually these buttons are invisible but the backlight gets activated when the button is touched. With the help of the software provided in the phone, these buttons can also be deactivated and you can switch to the on-screen buttons as per your convenience. Our review unit came with a screen protector film pre-installed, but it doesn’t cover the front completely and is easily scratched. So we would prefer a phone without screen protector film.

Compared to OnePlus 2, significant changes have been made in the fingerprint sensor given in OnePlus 3. It easily unlocks the phone and even when in standby mode, the phone gets unlocked as soon as the device is activated. The fingerprint sensor of OnePlus 3 is quite fast compared to many other devices, even in Mi 5 one has to press the physical home button first to unlock the phone. Up to five fingerprints can be stored in the OnePlus 3, and the sensor can also be used to authorize purchases and access controls for certain apps.

The edges of the phone are quite well designed. OnePlus’ familiar alert slider and volume buttons are given on the left side. There is a power button and dual SIM tray on the right side. At the bottom, there are speakers, USB Type-C port and 3.5 mm socket. Although the phone is 7.35 mm thin, due to the curved rear the phone appears thinner at the edges. Along with this, OnePlus 3 is also comfortable to hold. It is worth noting that the primary camera is quite outside and if you use the phone without a protective case, it may get damaged. Users get five plastic case options that you can buy along with the phone with different looks and finishes. Carbon, Bamboo, Apricot, Rosewood and Sandstone are the five plastic case options. The texturing done on the case is very beautiful and the phone looks quite beautiful even without the case.

Like the previous phone, OnePlus 3 has a 5.5-inch screen with 1080×1920 pixel resolution and its density is 401 ppi. However, OnePlus has used AMOLED screen this time. OnePlus X also had an AMOLED screen. There is a polarizing layer to make the phone readable in sunlight. Although it is not as crisp as the 1440×2560 pixels that come in many flagship smartphones these days, it is quite sharp and provides excellent picture quality.

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor is finally slowly coming into the limelight and there are now many devices available with this processor in India. Except LG G5 (Review), all the models coming with this processor are priced under Rs 30,000. The recently launched LeEco LE Max 2 for Rs 22,999 is also included in this list. Not only has this powerful processor been used in OnePlus 3, but it also has 6 GB LPDDR4 RAM and 64 GB non-expandable internal storage.

Apart from this, the phone supports 4G connectivity on both SIMs for FDD Band 3 and TDD Band 40. OnePlus 3 has features like Wi-Fi A/B/G/N/AC, Bluetooth 4.2 and NFC. To provide power to the phone, a non-removable battery of 3000 mAh has been provided and this is the first device of the company to come with some kind of fast charging technology. This phone comes with a 20-watt dash charger, which charges the phone up to 60 percent in just 30 minutes. The phone gets fully charged in just one hour of charging.

Charging and connectivity in the phone is through USB 2.0 Type-C port and the computer and charger can be connected with the cable that comes with the phone.

The special thing is that OnePlus will also sell a dash charger specially made for the car which can be plugged into a standard 12W car socket. We connected this charger to the phone, although the charging from it was not as fast as a wall-socket charger but if you travel most of the time then it can be a useful accessory for you.

software
Talking about the software of OnePlus 3, OnePlus 3 runs on OxygenOS 3.1.1 based on Android 6.0.1. OxygenOS works much like stock Android Marshmallow. It also has some useful new features. OxygenOS offers a variety of customized options in the phone while most of the features of Marshmallow have also been maintained in the phone. These include a new-look app permissions system, Now on Tap, and Doze Mode. With OxygenOS, the bootloader can be unlocked instantly.

One of the most important features of OnePlus 3 is the Shelf, which can be accessed by swiping right on the home screen. This gives you quick access to weather information, frequently used apps, widgets, and contacts. Other options like Adaptive Brightness, Color Temperature Settings, Ambient Display Mode can be accessed by going to the Settings menu. The ambient display can use the proximity sensor to give you basic information without having to access the phone. Apart from this, you can also choose the default keyboard option using Swiftkey.

Apart from this, some other customization options include a ‘Dark Mode’ to activate the phone to change the color of the menu to a dark shade, LED notification light color can be customized for different functions.

The primary camera of OnePlus 3 is 16 megapixels with Sony IMX 298 sensor while the front camera is 8 megapixels with 1.4 micron pixels. The rear camera can record 4K video and slow motion video can be recorded at 120 frames per second. While the front camera can record slow motion video with 1080 pixels at 30 frames per second. Apart from this, the rear camera also has optical image stabilization, phase detection autofocus and RAW image format support.

The Camera app is Google’s stock app that you see on Nexus devices. The app is simply designed and takes up most of the screen space for the viewfinder. That’s why there’s a single shutter button for taking pictures and recording video is a two-step process. Modes like time lapse, slow motion, video, manual and panorama are accessible via a small toggle in the top left corner.

While taking photos, you can also toggle the self-timer. Apart from this, there are also control options for flash, HD shooting, HDR mode and camera switcher. The camera app is relatively easy to use, but we’ve seen better apps with more controls on other devices.

While shooting outdoors in good lighting, the phone produces sharp pictures with detail but the pictures appear a bit scattered. The colors are very vibrant and the pictures also look bright and good. Sometimes the autofocus seems quite slow but once you lock on to a subject or scene, the photos are good. Both optical and electronic image stabilization help capture good quality photos and videos. But in low light, the pictures taken with the camera become oversaturated and get scattered.

The phone can produce stunning videos with detailing even at full-HD resolution. And you always have the option of 4K video recording for better sharpness. Slow motion and time lapse modes give good results. Very sharp pictures can be taken from the front camera and it produces much better pictures than other typical smartphones. Overall, the OnePlus 3 camera gives much better results than an ordinary smartphone shooting.

Among the smartphones we’ve reviewed so far equipped with the Snapdragon 820 processor, the OnePlus 3 proves to be a powerhouse. From playing games to loading web pages, opening apps to taking pictures, everything works extremely well. The performance of the phone is excellent with 6 GB RAM. There is no problem regarding heat or performance in any way in the phone and the phone works well even while doing heavy work.

Talking about benchmark figures, OnePlus 3 has broken some records with its tremendous performance. The OnePlus 3 is one of the most powerful Android smartphones we’ve ever used.

The phone worked well on cellular networks. The phone always works better on 4G and Wi-Fi connectivity. OnePlus 3 offers better call quality and the device’s dual microphone setup ensures good voice transmission. The phone’s battery life lasted 16 hours in our video loop test. Lasted for 45 minutes. Even while using continuous 4G network and doing serious work, this phone can easily last for a day without charging.

our decision
After the last three smartphones, OnePlus has finally managed to make the OnePlus 3 a great phone. Good work has been done in every department in the phone and OnePlus has eliminated all the problems seen in the previous devices in this phone. The phone has important features like NFC, accurate fingerprint sensor, brilliant AMOLED screen and fast charging options, due to which this phone meets the expectations everywhere.

But, the OnePlus 3 is not completely perfect. Although 64 GB internal storage is sufficient, some people may find the lack of expandable storage in the phone a problem. The single speaker is a bit weak and we encountered some file format recognition issues in the phone due to which we could not play some video and audio files. The pictures taken from the phone in low light were not as per our expectations. But leaving aside all these minor flaws, OnePlus 3 is a great smartphone. Coming with these features and capabilities for Rs 27,999, this phone can prove to be a ‘flagship killer’.
