Scientists at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory and Rutgers University identified several areas of the city in their study between 2016 and 2023, which are collapsing. For this, remote sensing technology called interferometric synthetic aperture radar (Insar) was used.
The report says that Lagardia’s runway in New York is pressing at the rate of 3.7 mm annually, while Arthur Ash Stadium is pressing at the rate of 4.6 mm annually. Both areas are built at the place where there used to be the first Landfill site.
The report also said that due to increasing sea water level, the risk of sinking of New York city is increasing. Not only this, this city may face storm and floods in future. The study has revealed that the areas of the city are sinking, where there have been changes related to the surface of the earth in the past. The construction of the building there increased the pressure on the land.
The cause of the collapse of the city areas is also considered to be thousands of years of natural processes of the ice age. It is said about the city of York that it is on the ground raised outside the snow sheet. The study states that the metropolitan area of the city is going to collapse about 1.6 mm every year.
