The objective of this project is to provide a robotic transport system to the astronauts reaching the Moon. In a statement, NASA said that the transport system on the moon will be very important to operate a permanent moon base in the 2030s.
According to NDTV report, robotics expert Ethan Schaler of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory said that we want to build the first railway system on the Moon, which will offer reliable, autonomous and durable payload transportation on the Moon. Operating a sustainable Moon base in the 2030s will require long-range robotic transport systems, he said.
NASA’s initial design shows that the FLOAT system will rely only on machines. Magnetic robots will reach the moon and vehicles will be fitted in them. Those trains will run at a speed of approximately 1.61 kilometers per hour. It is estimated that vehicles running on the moon will deliver 100 tons of material to the moon base every day.
The main objective of the project is to provide transportation services to the areas where astronauts will be active. The FLOAT system will be completely autonomous. It will work in the dusty and difficult environment of the Moon. As needed, NASA will reconfigure this system. The special thing is that the FLOAT system is being prepared in NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). Currently, different parts of the system are being tested in California.
