Following the cyber attack, the hacktivist group SN_BlackMeta claimed responsibility for the attack on the Internet Archive. They actually posted on X today saying, ‘The Internet Archive has experienced a major attack. We successfully attacked for five hours, their system is still down.’ Cybersecurity firm Radware then conducted an investigation to identify the culprits. Learned that SN_Blackmeta, a pro-Palestinian group, may be based in Russia and may also have ties to Sudan.
What users should do to stay safe
Considering the seriousness of the threat, cyber security experts have advised users to change their passwords immediately. Especially if an Internet Archive user uses the same password on another site, in such a situation, they should quickly change their password. Cybersecurity experts also advise that it’s best not to download files from the Internet Archive until the problem is fully resolved and the site is safe again.
SN_BlackMeta warned that they plan to continue attacking the Internet Archive because they believe it is linked to the United States, which they accuse of supporting Israel.
It is said that the increasing concern of these cyber threats has increased as the November 5 US presidential election approaches.
