According to a PTI report, in a statement ISRO said that the laser retrormifler Eri (LRA) on Chandrayaan-3 lander has started working. ISRO reported that the US space agency NASA’s Lunar Recognition Orbiter (LRO) successfully detected the reflected signals on 12 December 2023 and achieved the measurement of the laser range.
ISRO said that Lunar Orbitter Laser Ultimeter (Lola) was used on LRO. When this observation took place, the moon was having night and LRO was moving forward in the East of Chandrayaan-3.
Under an international cooperation, NASA’s LRA was adjusted to Vikram Lander of Chandrayaan-3. ISRO also stated that Vikram Lander of Chandrayaan-3, who landed near the southern pole of the moon on 23 August 2023, has been in contact with ‘Lola’ since then.
ISRO has said that ‘Chandrayaan-3’s Vikram lander will continue to do his work as a location marker on the moon surface. This will help the current and future moon missions. Working as Vikram Lander’s location marker will help in accurate detection of orbital situations of spacecraft. Along with this, disturbances related to the stitch and gravity of the moon can also be detected.
