It did not collide with the Earth, but came close to 18 thousand 500 kilometers. Coming so close to an asteroid puts it in the category of potentially dangerous.
Virtual Telescope Project According2024 JN16 was discovered two days ago by an amateur astronomer Gennadiy Borisov. He was working at the Margo Observatory in Crimea when the asteroid was discovered.
According to the report, this asteroid belongs to the Apollo asteroid group, whose orbits intersect with Earth. The well-known asteroid of this group was the Chelyabinsk meteor. In the year 2013, that asteroid caused devastation by falling on the Russian city of Chelyabinsk. Its size was more than a 6-storey building. Its rupture caused an explosion more powerful than a nuclear explosion. Many people were injured in the city. The windows of people’s houses were broken.
According to NASA, these are also called minor planets. Just as all the planets in our solar system revolve around the Sun, similarly asteroids also revolve around the Sun. Asteroids are rocky remnants left over from the early formation of our solar system about 4.6 billion years ago. Scientists have so far detected 11 lakh 13 thousand 527 asteroids. Most asteroids are found in the main asteroid belt, which lies between Mars and Jupiter. Their size can range from 10 meters to 530 kilometers. The total mass of all the asteroids discovered so far is less than that of the Earth’s Moon.
