Social Media Scams: The nature of social media platforms is changing. Contact can now reset your account. Recently, such an international fraud circle is ensnaring common people. How to protect yourself?
Today, popular social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp have become scammers’ paradise. A recent sensational investigation revealed that one unwitting click could wipe out all your hard-earned savings. International scams have been ensnaring common people especially with fake investment and get-rich-quick advertisements.
The investigation revealed the terrible truth
A week-long investigation by Britain’s Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has uncovered more than 1,000 suspicious ads. Surprisingly, more than half of these ads had already been reported. However, the Meta authorities did not stop them.
Common types of fraud are:
Incredible Profits in a Short Time: 10% or more return guaranteed in 1 week.
Risk Free Investment: The promise of ‘guaranteed profits’ in the stock market or cryptocurrencies.
Duplication of Named Institutions: Fake loans or offers using big bank names or logos.
Mountains of complaints, but where is the remedy?
According to the investigating agencies, the same gang is running these advertisements again and again under different names. Although social media companies claim they are working tirelessly to prevent fraud, the reality is quite different. In many cases, even in countries where the laws are very strict (such as Australia), these ads are quickly blocked, but in countries like the UK, they run freely.
Why is this risk increasing?
According to experts, it is not a limitation of technology, but a lack of goodwill on the part of companies. Although the UK’s ‘Online Safety Act’ has come into effect, the provisions relating to fraudulent advertising have not yet been fully enforced. As a result, strict legal action cannot be taken against the companies.
How to protect yourself?
1. Stay away from incredible offers: Be careful if you see offers of double money or unusual profits in a short period of time.
2. Verify ad source: Check the official website and government license of the concerned institution before making any financial investment.
3. Do not share personal information: Do not give OTP, bank password or PIN number to anyone under any circumstances.
4. Do not click on suspicious links: Check the domain name carefully before clicking on flashy ad links.
It is now dangerous to believe every advertisement you see on social media. Remember, your awareness is what can save you from this terrible financial loss.
